Regenerative Bison Ranching
The founders of 777 Bison Ranch believe that sustainable land management is the key to producing healthy, high-quality bison. For over 35 years, 777 Bison has focused on the entire ecosystem, using holistic management practices to improve biodiversity, enhance the land, and promote a thriving bison herd.
Ranching Practices;
Regenerative Grazing
777 Bison Ranch runs a grass-fed cow/calf operation with 1,500 DNA-tested bison, using planned grazing techniques that allow year-round grazing. This promotes plant recovery, ensures drought reserves, and results in healthier forage, plants, and animals.
Carbon Sequestration
777 Bison Ranch partnered with Applied Ecological Services to test carbon sequestration using their regenerative grazing model. This helps reduce their carbon footprint and contributes to combating global warming. Results from the testing, which began in 2016, are expected soon.
Low-Stress Handling
Following the teachings of Bud Williams and consultations with Dr. Temple Grandin, the ranch uses low-stress, humane handling techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and workers.
100% Grassfed Certification
777 Bison Ranch is Certified Grassfed, meaning:
- Animals are fed a 100% forage diet.
- Animals are pasture-raised, never confined.
- No hormones or antibiotics are used.
Holistic Land Management: By increasing native plant diversity, 777 Bison has created a healthy environment that supports both wildlife and livestock, resulting in a robust and productive herd.
- Commitment to Conservation: The ranch works closely with conservation groups, continually striving to protect and enhance the surrounding ecosystem.
- Sustainable Practices: 777 Bison recently retired its hay operation, allowing native species like grouse to thrive and further boost the health of the land.
- Wildlife Partnerships: In partnership with South Dakota’s Department of Game, Fish, and Parks, 777 Bison is actively involved in studying and conserving local wildlife, including efforts to support the mule deer population.
777 Bison Ranch is more than just a bison producer; they are dedicated stewards of the land, fostering a balanced, sustainable environment for future generations.
