Pitman Family Farms
Sanger, CA
A Legacy of Ethical Poultry Farming
The Pitman Family first began raising free-range chickens in 1954. More than 70 years later, their commitment to raising birds the right way continues. Pitman Farms specially bred, slow-growth chicken is completely Better Chicken Commitment compliant, ensuring the highest animal welfare standards as well as Certified Halal.
The Better Chicken Commitment is the leading set of standards for chicken welfare driving the entire food industry towards higher welfare practices. Grounded in scientific research and developed by welfare experts, the BCC addresses issues related to selective breeding, poor housing conditions, stocking density, and slaughter. It includes guidance on which chicken breeds a farm can raise (preventing selectively bred “fast-growth” chickens), how these chickens are housed, how tightly they are packed together, and how they are slaughtered.
BCC Requirements:
Maximum Stocking Density: 6 lbs/sq ft - more space for less birds
Litter: At least 3 inches of friable litter covering the whole floor of the house
Lighting: Minimum 8 hours of continuous light and 6 hours of continuous darkness daily
Slaughter: Follow humane practices that avoid pre-stun handling and instead utilize a multi-step controlled- atmosphere processing system
Breed: Adopt breeds that demonstrate higher welfare outcomes
Auditing: Demonstrate 100% compliance with all standards via third-party auditing
